Located in the serene beauty of Traverse City, Michigan, our ranch provides a tranquil environment where veterans can connect with horses and rediscover their strength and resilience. Our Horses 4 Heroes program is structured in progressive 8-week sessions, allowing participants to build skills and confidence at their own pace.

We offer a structured, multi-phase program series. Each phase builds upon the previous one, offering a holistic approach to horsemanship and personal development.

Introduction to  Horsemanship  “Phase 1”

  • Focus: Building trust and communication with horses through ground work.
  • Benefits: Develops patience, enhances communication skills, and fosters self-awareness.
  • Learn: Basic horse handling, understanding equine behavior, and establishing a respectful partnership.

Introduction to Therapeutic Riding “Phase 2”

  • Focus: Utilizing the movement of the horse to improve physical and emotional well-being.
  • Benefits: Enhanced balance, coordination, and muscle strength, as well as reduced stress and anxiety.
  • Learn: Basic riding skills, therapeutic techniques, and how the horse’s movement can positively affect physical and mental wellness.

Introduction to Recreational Trail Riding “Phase 3”

  • Focus: Enjoying the beauty of Traverse City’s trails from horseback.
  • Benefits: Increased confidence, improved riding skills, and a sense of adventure.
  • Learn: Basic trail riding techniques, safe riding practices, and how to navigate diverse terrain.

Wilderness Trail Riding “Phase 4”

  • Focus: Expanding riding experiences, including exploring wilderness areas surrounding Traverse City.
  • Benefits: Deeper connection with nature, enhanced navigational skills, and a sense of accomplishment.
  • Learn: Advanced trail riding techniques, wilderness safety, and how to plan and execute off-site rides.

Wilderness Trail Riding & Camping “Phase 5”

  • Focus: Immersive multi-day experiences, combining trail riding with overnight camping in the wilderness.
  • Benefits: Fosters camaraderie, builds resilience, and creates lasting memories.
  • Learn:  Advanced horsemanship, and navigating extended outdoor experiences.

Masterson Method

  • Focus:  Individual sessions with an Equine Specialist helping care for our  therapeutic herd.
  • Benefits: Reduced anxiety, increased  mindfulness for the participant and release of tension for the horse..
  • Learn:  Gain self-awareness, self-regulation and horse speak.
